You already know that it's important to have your "from" address in your subscribers address book so your emails never get blocked and images load etc. Well, Yahoo has recently made an update to their Mail service which makes this more important than ever.
It is quite likely that your subscribers get emails everyday from family, friends, spammers and newsletters they've subscribed to. Your challenge as an email marketer is to make sure they read your emails over the hundreds of others they get every week.
Yahoo have enabled filtering based on your address book
Yahoo Mail have recently given users the ability to quickly filter their inbox (or any folder) to just show the emails from senders you've added to your address book - with a simple click of a button. Here's what it looks like with "all" selected. As you can see, every email in the inbox is visible.
However, when a user clicks on the "contacts" tab, you can quickly see the difference - most of the email newsletters are no longer visible.
This makes it very easy for a a Yahoo Mail user to filter out your emails and further stresses the importance of getting your sending address into all your subscribers address books.
Ways to get into your subscribers address book
There are many opportunities to ask your subscribers to add your sending address to their address book.
Thank-you page
When a visitor completes the subscribe form on your website and are presented with a thank-you page, this is the perfect opportunity to ask to be added to their address book to ensure they always receive your emails.
Welcome or double opt-in email
You can again remind new subscribers that they should add your sending email into their address book to ensure they always receive your emails.
On all emails you send
We always recommend having the following text in the header of all email templates "To always ensure you receive our emails, add " This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it " to your address book"
Profile update page
If you have a page where subscribers can update their email address or preferences, this is another opportunity to remind them that your address should be in their address book.
Tip: what about including a vCard or another easy way for a subscriber to quickly add your sending address to their address book - this could be provided on the thank-you page and welcome email!
