Running an online competition (or lottery) in Australia requires that you have the correct permits to do so. Unfortunately, the rules vary from state to state, but here's a basic guideline as to the requirements in the various regions of Australia (this information may have changed, so be sure to contact each state Lotteries Authority prior to running your online competition). Generally, the permit costs and requirements are determined by the value of the prize being offered by the online competition. Additionally, some states only require permits for games of chance and don't require permits where the winner is drawn based on answering some questions or an exhibit of skill.

Some useful information can be found regarding online competitions on the Australian Government website here.

If however there is any random element to the prize draw (even where an entrant has answered a game of skill question first, but a winner is then drawn randomly from all correct entries) a permit is required.
